There are three main ways to create clothing under your own brand: cut and sew, private label, and decorated blank apparel. Each has a different balance of uniqueness, cost, minimums and speed. Choosing the right one for your stage saves money and gets you to market faster.

Cut and sew: fully original garments

With cut and sew manufacturing, the garment is built from scratch: fabric is selected and cut from your pattern, then sewn to your specifications. You control the silhouette, fit, fabric, stitching, trims and every detail.

Choose cut and sew if:

  • Fit is part of your brand, for example oversized streetwear or performance activewear.
  • You want fabrics, colours or details that are not available off the shelf.
  • You are building long-term brand value and want products competitors cannot copy easily.

What to prepare: a tech pack, a measurement chart and time for sampling. Our tech pack and sampling team can help if you are starting from sketches.

Private label: your brand on a proven garment

Private label clothing starts from a garment the manufacturer already knows how to make well. You choose fabric and colour options, add your artwork, and finish it with your own neck labels, hang tags and packaging. Customers see your brand, not the factory’s.

Choose private label if:

  • You want a professional branded product line without full pattern development.
  • You need to launch quickly but still want custom labels and packaging.
  • Your differentiation is your brand, community or design artwork rather than a unique cut.

Decorated blanks: fastest route to product

Blank garments decorated with printing or embroidery are the quickest way to get product. They work well for event merch, team wear and testing designs. The trade-off is that the same base garment is available to anyone, so uniqueness depends on your artwork.

How to decide: four questions

  1. Is fit or fabric part of your selling point? If yes, lean towards cut and sew.
  2. How quickly do you need stock? Short deadlines favour private label or blanks.
  3. What is your development budget? Cut and sew needs budget for patterns and samples.
  4. How will you sell? Retail and premium positioning usually benefit from original garments and full branding.

The hybrid approach most brands use

You do not have to pick only one. Many brands launch with one or two cut and sew hero pieces (for example a signature hoodie with a custom fit) alongside private label basics such as t-shirts. Shared labels and packaging make the whole collection feel consistent while keeping development costs under control.

Whichever model you pick, minimums matter. Read what MOQ means in clothing manufacturing to plan your quantities.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between cut and sew and private label?

Cut and sew creates an original garment from your own pattern and fabric choices. Private label takes a garment developed by the manufacturer and finishes it with your branding, labels and packaging so it sells under your name.

Is cut and sew more expensive than private label?

Usually per unit and in development, because it involves pattern making, grading and sampling of an original design. In return you get a garment competitors cannot buy.

Can I combine cut and sew and private label in one collection?

Yes, and many brands do. A common approach is one or two original cut and sew hero pieces supported by private label basics that share the same labels and packaging.

Which option is fastest to launch?

Decorated blanks and private label are fastest because the garment already exists. Cut and sew needs extra time for patterns and sampling before bulk production.
