Direct-to-film transfers with full-color detail on cotton, polyester, blends, nylon and dark garments.

Direct-to-film printing, or DTF, prints your full-color design onto a special transfer film, coats it with a fine adhesive powder, cures it, and then heat-presses the transfer onto the garment. The result is a vibrant, detailed print with a soft, flexible feel that bonds to almost any fabric. DTF printing services combine the detail of digital printing with the versatility to decorate cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, and even some technical fabrics.
At MAKEWELL APPAREL, we use DTF for hoodies, t-shirts, jackets, activewear, caps, and bags. It is a strong choice when a design has many colors or fine detail and the fabric is not ideal for other methods. Compare all options in our printing methods guide.
First, your artwork is printed in reverse onto PET film using CMYK and white inks, with the white layer ensuring bright colors on dark garments. While the ink is wet, hot-melt adhesive powder is applied and then cured. The finished transfer is placed on the garment and heat-pressed at a controlled temperature, time, and pressure, after which the film is peeled away, leaving the design bonded to the fabric.
Because transfers are printed digitally, there are no screens or color limits, and detailed gradients and small text reproduce cleanly.
DTF’s biggest advantage is versatility. It works on 100 percent cotton, polyester, cotton-poly blends, fleece, nylon jackets, canvas bags, and many performance fabrics that are difficult for DTG or screen printing. It also works on light and dark colors equally well, thanks to the white ink layer.
For highly stretchy fabrics such as leggings, we test transfers for stretch and recovery during sampling. For all-over prints on white polyester, sublimation may be the better choice.
Compared with DTG, DTF works on more fabric types, including polyester, and needs no pre-treatment of the garment, though DTG feels slightly softer on cotton. Compared with screen printing, DTF handles unlimited colors and small runs without setup costs, while screen printing is more economical and durable for large runs of simple designs.
We recommend DTF when you need detailed, full-color artwork on mixed fabrics or small to medium quantities.
Supply high-resolution PNG files at 300 DPI at print size with a transparent background. Avoid very thin isolated lines and semi-transparent effects, which can weaken adhesion. Design areas with lots of solid coverage feel heavier, so we may suggest knock-outs that let the garment show through for a softer, more breathable print. We send a mock-up before sampling.
DTF prints are flexible and durable, with good wash resistance when pressed correctly. They have a slight film feel compared with DTG, which reduces with smaller or knocked-out designs. Washing inside out in cold water and avoiding high dryer heat keeps prints looking fresh. We wash-test transfers on your fabric during sampling.
DTF is popular for detailed chest and back graphics on hoodies and tees, logos on polyester sportswear and team kits, sleeve and neck prints, nylon jacket branding, cap fronts, tote bags, and personalized names and numbers. It is also useful for mixed orders where the same design must appear on different fabrics.
DTF printing on our garments starts from 50 pieces per design for production orders. Samples usually take 7 to 10 business days, and bulk production typically takes 2 to 4 weeks after approval. Explore all apparel manufacturing services.
Many collections combine cotton tees, cotton-poly hoodies, polyester sportswear, and nylon outerwear. With traditional methods, each fabric might need a different decoration technique, which makes it hard to keep a logo looking identical across products. DTF solves this by applying the same transfer to almost every fabric, so your logo’s colors, size, and detail stay consistent from a t-shirt to a windbreaker.
This consistency is especially valuable for brands with strong visual identities, sports clubs with kits across several garment types, and companies decorating uniforms made from different materials. Our team prints a test transfer on each fabric in your order during sampling, checking color, adhesion, and stretch, so the finished collection looks like one coordinated range.
DTF handles artwork that would be expensive or impossible with screen printing. Designs with many colors, gradients, fine line illustrations, small text, and photographic elements print cleanly because there are no screens or color separations. Neon and bright colors print vividly, and the white layer keeps colors accurate even on black garments.
For very large designs with heavy solid coverage, we may suggest breaking up solid areas with texture or knock-outs so the print stays flexible and breathable. Our artwork team reviews each file and recommends small adjustments that improve the finished feel without changing your design’s character.
DTF pairs well with other decoration. A detailed DTF back print and an embroidered chest logo create a premium mixed-media look, while patches add texture to jackets and caps. DTF can also apply small branded details, such as neck prints and sleeve hits, which complement woven neck labels and hang tags from our labels and hang tags service.
We plan all decoration together during sampling so placements, colors, and sizes work as a coordinated design.
Reliable DTF results depend on consistent printing, even powder application, correct curing, and precise heat pressing. We calibrate printers for accurate color, cure transfers at controlled temperatures, and press each garment using settings tested for that fabric. A first-piece check confirms placement and adhesion before the full run continues.
Finished garments are inspected for edge lifting, color accuracy, and positioning, and samples from each order are wash-tested. Approved settings and artwork are stored, so reorders match your original prints.
