From Idea to Approved Sample

Every successful garment starts with a clear specification and a sample that proves it works. Skipping these steps is the most common reason new brands receive bulk orders that do not match what they imagined. MAKEWELL APPAREL offers apparel sampling services and tech pack development so your designs are documented precisely, tested in real fabric, and refined before production begins.

Whether you arrive with a complete tech pack, a rough sketch, a mood board, or a garment you want to improve, our team helps you define measurements, materials, trims, colors, and construction, then produces samples you can touch, wear, and photograph. Sampling connects directly to our cut and sew production, so approved samples move smoothly into bulk.

What Is a Tech Pack?

A tech pack is the instruction manual for your garment. It tells the factory exactly how to make the product so every piece matches your design. A complete tech pack includes flat technical sketches from front, back, and side; a measurement chart with tolerances for each size; a bill of materials listing fabric, trims, labels, and packaging; construction details such as seam types and stitch counts; colorways with Pantone references; artwork placement and sizes; and labeling and packing instructions.

Clear tech packs reduce errors, speed up quoting, and make reorders consistent, because everyone works from the same document.

Tech Pack Development Service

If you do not have a tech pack, our team can help create one. We start with your sketches, references, and goals, then develop technical flats, measurements based on your target fit, material and trim specifications, and construction notes. We recommend practical options that suit your budget and production method, and flag details that might add cost or risk.

Your tech pack becomes your property and the reference for sampling, bulk production, and future reorders.

Pattern Making and Grading

Patterns translate the tech pack into the flat shapes that fabric is cut from. Our pattern makers create a base pattern in your sample size, then grade it across your size range so every size keeps the intended fit and proportions. Grading rules are recorded in the tech pack, and patterns are adjusted after fit sessions until the fit is right.

Good patterns are the foundation of consistent sizing, which keeps returns low and customers loyal.

Types of Samples

Different samples serve different purposes. A proto sample tests the design and construction, often in substitute fabric. A fit sample checks measurements and fit on a real person. A salesman or photo sample is made in final fabric and colors for marketing and pre-orders. A pre-production sample confirms every detail before bulk, including fabric, trims, labels, and decoration, and becomes the standard bulk production is checked against.

Not every project needs every stage. We recommend the sampling path that balances certainty with time and cost.

Fit Sessions and Revisions

During fit sessions, samples are tried on a model or fit form, and we review length, ease, shoulder and armhole fit, rise, and how the garment moves. You share feedback, we update the pattern and tech pack, and produce a revised sample if needed. Most garments are approved within one or two rounds when the tech pack is clear.

Remote clients can review fit through photos, videos, and measurement reports, or try samples themselves and send comments.

Decoration and Trim Sampling

Samples also test decoration and trims. We strike off prints and embroidery to check colors, sizes, and placement, test printing methods and embroidery on your actual fabric, and confirm labels and hang tags and packaging. This prevents surprises such as prints cracking, colors shifting, or logos sitting too low on larger sizes.

Sampling Timeline and Costs

Most samples take 7 to 10 business days once materials are available. Custom fabrics, dyed colors, or special trims may add time. Sample costs are higher per piece than bulk because each sample is made individually, and we provide a clear sample quote up front. Approved samples are kept as the standard for production and reorders.

Moving from Sample to Bulk

Once you approve a pre-production sample, bulk production begins using the same tech pack, patterns, materials, and processes. Inline and final inspections compare bulk pieces with the approved sample for measurements, construction, color, and decoration. Our low minimums from 50 pieces per design let you move from sample to a first production run without a large upfront commitment.

Common Sampling Mistakes to Avoid

Many sampling delays come from a few avoidable issues. Incomplete measurements leave pattern makers guessing, so we always confirm a full measurement chart before cutting. Vague material notes, such as simply asking for cotton, can lead to the wrong weight or feel, so we specify fiber, weight, and construction. Approving a sample without wearing or washing it can hide fit and shrinkage problems that appear later.

Changing several details at once between rounds also makes it hard to see what improved the fit. We recommend focusing each revision on clear priorities and recording every change in the tech pack. With a clear process, most garments are approved quickly and move into bulk production without surprises.

Sampling for New Brands

If you are launching your first collection, sampling is where your ideas become real products. We recommend starting with a small number of core styles and sampling them thoroughly rather than sampling many styles at once. This keeps costs manageable and helps you build a strong foundation of patterns and specifications you can reuse in future seasons.

Photo samples in final fabric and colors can be used for your website, social media, and pre-orders before bulk production, helping you test demand and plan quantities. Our team guides new brands through each step and explains how decisions affect cost and timing.

Sampling for Every Product Category

We sample across our full product range, including t-shirts, hoodies, jeans, jackets, activewear, knitwear, and accessories. Each category has its own key checks, such as opacity for leggings, shrinkage for denim, and gauge and hand feel for knitwear, and we tailor sampling to test what matters most for each product.
