What Is Cut and Sew Manufacturing? The Process Step by Step

How an original garment is actually made: from tech pack and pattern to marker, cutting, sewing, finishing and inspection, and when cut and sew is worth it.
What to Look for in a Cut and Sew Clothing Manufacturer

Cut and sew is the process of making a garment from scratch: fabric is cut from a pattern created for your design and then sewn together. It is the opposite of buying ready-made blank garments and adding a print. The result is an original product with the fit, fabric and details you choose.

Key takeaways

  • Cut and sew means building an original garment from your own pattern, not decorating a ready-made blank.
  • The process runs from tech pack and sourcing through pattern, sample, cutting, sewing, finishing and quality checks.
  • At MAKEWELL APPAREL it starts from 50 pieces per design, with samples in 7 to 10 business days and bulk in 2 to 4 weeks.

This guide walks through each stage, so you know what happens to your design and what to prepare.

The cut and sew process, step by step

1. Design and tech pack

Everything starts with clear instructions: flat sketches, measurements, materials and construction notes in a tech pack. If you only have sketches, our tech pack and sampling team can build it.

2. Fabric and trims sourcing

The main fabric, rib, thread, zippers, buttons and labels are selected and ordered. See our guide to trims and hardware and our fabric selection service.

3. Pattern making and grading

A pattern maker drafts the pattern pieces for your base size, then grades them into every size in your range using your size chart.

4. Sampling

A sample is cut and sewn so you can check fit, fabric and construction. Revisions are made until you approve it. Samples take 7 to 10 business days with us. Read the full sampling process.

5. Marker making and cutting

For bulk, pattern pieces are arranged on a marker to use fabric efficiently. Fabric is spread in layers and cut, then pieces are bundled by size.

6. Sewing

Pieces are assembled in a planned sequence of operations: shoulders, sleeves, side seams, ribs, hems and details. The seam and stitch types you specify matter here. See seams and stitches explained.

7. Decoration and finishing

Prints, embroidery, washes or dyeing may happen before or after sewing depending on the technique. Garments are trimmed, pressed and labelled.

8. Quality checks and packing

Measurements, stitching and decoration are checked, then garments are folded and packed to your instructions with your labels and hang tags.

When cut and sew is worth it

  • Fit is part of your identity (oversized streetwear, performance activewear).
  • You want fabrics, colours or details that blanks do not offer.
  • You are building a brand for the long term, not a one-off merch run.

With a 50-piece minimum per design, cut and sew is realistic even for a first collection. Learn more on our cut and sew manufacturing page.

Frequently asked questions

What does cut and sew mean in clothing?

Cut and sew means a garment is made from scratch: fabric is cut from a custom pattern and sewn together, rather than decorating a pre-made blank garment.

Is cut and sew better than printing on blanks?

It is not better for every project, but it gives you full control over fit, fabric and details. Blanks are faster for simple merch; cut and sew suits brands that want original products.

What do I need to start a cut and sew project?

A tech pack or at least sketches, reference garments and target measurements, plus fabric preferences and quantities. A manufacturer with development support can help fill the gaps.

How long does cut and sew production take?

At MAKEWELL APPAREL, samples take 7 to 10 business days and bulk production takes 2 to 4 weeks after sample approval.
