The Garment Sampling Process: Steps, Timeline and What to Check

Proto, fit, size set and pre-production samples explained, with a realistic timeline, a sample inspection checklist and tips for feedback that saves revision rounds.

A sample is a physical test version of your garment, made before bulk production. It is where your design meets reality: fabric, fit, colour, stitching and artwork all become something you can touch, wear and wash.

Sampling is also where most launch delays happen. This guide explains each sample type, a realistic timeline, what to check, and how to give feedback that gets you to approval in fewer rounds.

Types of samples

SamplePurpose
Proto sampleFirst version from your tech pack to check overall design and construction
Fit sampleRefines the fit on a real body or form after proto feedback
Size setOne piece in several sizes to check grading across the range
Pre-production (PP) sampleMade with final fabric, trims, labels and decoration; the reference for bulk
Top of productionPulled from the start of the bulk run to confirm it matches the PP sample

Simple decorated garments may only need one sample. Original cut and sew designs usually go through proto, fit and pre-production stages.

The sampling process step by step

  1. Tech pack review. The manufacturer checks your tech pack and asks questions about anything unclear.
  2. Materials confirmation. Fabric, trims and colours are selected or sourced.
  3. Pattern making. A pattern is drafted from your measurements.
  4. Cutting and sewing. The sample is cut and constructed.
  5. Decoration. Printing, embroidery or patches are applied.
  6. Review and feedback. You inspect the sample and send comments.
  7. Revision or approval. Changes are made, or the sample is approved for bulk.

How long sampling takes

At MAKEWELL APPAREL, a sample takes 7 to 10 business days once specs and materials are confirmed. Add shipping time and your review time for each round. After approval, bulk production takes 2 to 4 weeks depending on the garment, quantity and decoration.

The fastest way to shorten the whole process is a complete tech pack and quick, specific feedback.

Sample inspection checklist

  • Measurements: measure every point of measure and compare with your spec sheet and tolerances.
  • Fit: try it on your fit model. Check shoulders, chest, length, sleeves and movement.
  • Fabric: weight, hand-feel, stretch and recovery, opacity and colour.
  • Construction: seams straight and flat, no loose threads, even stitching, secure hems.
  • Decoration: artwork size, placement, colour accuracy and edge sharpness.
  • Trims and labels: correct components, placement and attachment.
  • Wash test: wash and dry as your care label says, then re-measure for shrinkage and check print durability.

How to give feedback that works

  • Be specific and measurable. “Increase body length by 1 inch in all sizes” beats “make it longer”.
  • Use photos with markings. Circle the exact area and add a note.
  • Consolidate comments into one list per round instead of several messages.
  • Prioritise. Separate must-fix issues from nice-to-have changes.
  • Update the tech pack so the next version reflects every agreed change.

Common sampling mistakes

  • Approving a sample without a wash test.
  • Checking fit on only one person or one size.
  • Changing the design direction between rounds instead of refining it.
  • Not keeping the approved sample as the physical reference for bulk.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to make a clothing sample?

At MAKEWELL APPAREL, samples take 7 to 10 business days once the tech pack and materials are confirmed. New designs often need one or two revision rounds.

How many samples do I need before production?

For a new design, plan for at least a first sample and a revised sample. Complex garments or tight fits may need a fit sample and a pre-production sample as well.

Can I skip sampling to save time?

It is not recommended. Skipping the sample risks an entire production run with fit, fabric or print problems. A sample costs far less than a failed bulk order.

What happens after I approve the sample?

The approved sample becomes the reference for bulk production, which takes 2 to 4 weeks at MAKEWELL APPAREL depending on garment, quantity and decoration.
